Sometimes the best meals are the ones you never planned for.
We had already been walking around for quite a while, looking for somewhere to eat. The restaurants we originally had in mind were either crowded, too far away, or simply did not feel right at the time. Eventually, hunger won, and we decided to stop at a small restaurant we happened to pass.
From the outside, there was nothing that immediately stood out. No long queue, no impressive storefront, and none of us had heard much about it before. It was basically a “we're already here, so why not?” decision.
Because of that, our expectations were pretty low.
Then the food arrived.
The first dish was already much better than expected. The flavours were balanced, everything tasted freshly prepared, and even the simpler dishes had clearly been given some thought. As more food came to the table, our accidental restaurant choice slowly became one of the highlights of the trip.
What I liked most was that nothing felt like it was trying too hard. It was simply good food, cooked properly and served in a comfortable setting.
Maybe the lack of expectations made it even better. When you visit somewhere famous, you already have an idea of what the experience should be. Here, there was nothing to compare it against. We could simply enjoy what was in front of us.
By the end of the meal, we were joking about how close we had been to walking straight past the place.
Food trips usually involve plenty of planning, like restaurants saved on maps, reviews checked in advance, and dishes you already know you want to order. But every once in a while, it is worth leaving a little space for an accident.
This one turned out pretty well.
